The S/Lab X-Alp is the touring-leaning follow-up to the Arc'teryx Procline, which started life as a winter alpinist's boot. Salomon added a ribbed exoskeleton around the midfoot, so the shell stays stiff under load and the boot skis with more power on the way down. Think of it as the Procline that spends more time on the skin track.
The fully zippered gaiter and lower buckle cable system are gone, and the sole uses lower-density rubber with no toe cover. What you keep is the cuff: 75˚ of fore/aft motion in walk mode, plus 35˚ of lateral flex that no other boot has at the cuff. Wider skis need extra torque to stay on edge, and the 14 mm oversized pivot cuts play so your power goes straight to them.
